Overview
Color dyed with madder root
Story
In Japan, since ancient times, three types of red dyes have been used: madder, safflower, and suo.
Of these, the one dyed with madder root is called scarlet.
Originally, red and scarlet had the same meaning, representing the colors of the sun and fire.
Scarlet is also called “Hiiro” because it reminds us of fire.
A shallow scarlet color is called Asahi, and a deep scarlet color is called Fukahi.
Scarlet is called Scarlet in English.
